Presentation of the ISN

Introduction

The Schipperke, Belgium’s « Little Black Devil » is a breed with a rich history as a versatile shepherd, barge dog, watchdog, and loyal companion. While dedicated clubs exist at national levels, there is a growing need for a centralized, international network to facilitate communication, and share knowledge globally. The International Schipperke Network is proposed to fill this void. By uniting the global Schipperke community, we can more effectively address breed-specific challenges, promote genetic diversity, and ensure our Schipperke’s distinct characteristics and spirited temperament are preserved for future generations.

Mission Statement

The International Schipperke Network is dedicated to the global preservation, protection, and promotion of the Schipperke. We unite breeders, judges, and enthusiasts across borders to safeguard the Schipperke’s unique silhouette, spirited character, and robust health. Our mission is to foster an open international community that champions the breed’s versatility—from its heritage as a faithful Flemish dog to its modern role as a devoted companion and performance athlete.

Vision Statement

To be the world’s leading collaborative platform for the Schipperke fancy, ensuring a future where the breed is celebrated not only for its distinct appearance but for its intelligence and longevity. We imagine a global network where knowledge flows freely, breeding standards are upheld with integrity, and the Schipperke continues to thrive as a healthy, agile, and fiercely loyal breed for generations to come.

Guiding Principles

Preservation of Core Type

We pledge to uphold the core breed standards, preserving the Schipperke’s characteristic silhouette, unique coat pattern (including the ruff, cape, and culottes), and fox-like expression. We oppose trends that alter the natural, hardy appearance that is essential to the breed’s identity.

Health & Longevity

We prioritize the physical and mental well-being of the breed above all else. We support the transparent sharing of health data among breeders globally and champion research into genetic diversity to maintain the Schipperke’s reputation as a robust and long-lived dog.

Global Unity

Like the volksmensen and shoemakers of the 1690s that once connected the Schipperke’s ancestors, we serve as a central channel connecting breed clubs worldwide. We believe in communication, friendship, and cooperation over competition between clubs, fostering a spirit of mutual respect and shared goals.

Education & Mentorship

We are committed to educating judges, breeders, and new owners on the correct “big personality” temperament of the Schipperke—inquisitive, confident, and alert. We will provide resources to ensure the breed is understood and judged correctly in the ring and cared for appropriately in the home.

Versatility in Sport and Show

We view the Conformation Ring and the Sports Field as equal pillars of the breed. A Schipperke is a working dog in a small package. We are dedicated to uniting the fragmented sports community, ensuring that disciplines like Agility, Hoopers, Rally, and Obedience are leveraged to showcase our breeds versatile identity, not an afterthought.

Join Us!

The establishment of The International Schipperke Network represents a significant step forward for the breed. By adhering to this Mission, Vision, and these Principles, we can build a strong, lasting collaborative network that will serve as a guardian for the Schipperke globally. We invite all who share this passion to join us in setting the course for the future of the “Little Captain.
